Born and raised in Rockland County, lived on Haring Ave, Sparkill, graduated in 1958. Joined the U. S. Army in the fall of 1958, spent basic training in Ft. Knox , Kentucky then shipped overseas to Japan, assigned to Camp Zama Military base for 2 ½ years. Honorably discharged in January of 1962. Went to work as Police Officer on the Palisade Parkway Police Department. Joined the N.Y.P.D. in 1963. Got married in May 1965 to Helen Scanlan, a Nyack High School Graduate. Brought my 1st home on Ferdon Avenue in Sparkill in 1965. Have three children, Jennifer A, Richard H. Jr. and Steven C.
Retired fromN.Y.P.D. July 1, 1978 on disability injury, worked in 44 Pct. Patrol, Burglary Squad, and Selective Enforcement Division. Worked as Chauffeur for C.E.O of a company in Orangeburg, N.Y.
After accepting the position of Assistant Director of Police at the University of Tampa, my family and I moved to Florida. As part of my job requirement I attended and graduated from the Tampa Police academy receiving my accreditation as a Police Officer from the state of Florida.
Left Police work in 1983 went to work in private sector as Director of Safety/Security of a 350 bed hospital in St. Petersburg, Fl. Survived Hurricane Elena in 1985, was responsible for the safe evacuation of over 225 patients during the height of the Hurricane.
Downsizing in the Hospital industry forced me out of the business, went to work in Commercial Real estate as project/site Superintendent. Took position as Building Engineer of 9 story office building in downtown Clearwater in 1999. Retired from that position in May of 2003. Helen also retired after 19 years with the Pinellas County School system as a teacher’s assistant.
My three children also live in Florida, Daughter Jennifer 37, has 2 children, married to a St. Petersburg Firefighter. She is also following her Mothers footsteps and is working in the Pasco County School system. Son, Richard Jr. 36, also followed my footsteps and joined the Dunedin Police Department, was injured in a police accident, retired and is working for Ryland Homes as a construction manager, married and has 2 sons. Youngest son Steven C. 24, recently brought his own home in Holiday Florida, and has been working for the past 9 years in Restaurant management. He hopes to have his own business in the near future.
Helen and I are enjoying retired life, traveling and renewing old friendships with relatives and friends.
I enjoy fishing, woodworking, photography, computers, reading, and beautiful sunsets on the beach.
