Obituary

William 'Bill" Crable, the devoted husband for 47 years of Annamae Jersey, passed away on February 21. In addition to his wife, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Lisa of Blauvelt; his daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Scott Lange of Tappan; his daughter, Patty Gannon and her fiance Thomas of Campbell Hall, and four grandchildren, William Crable III, Thomas Crable and Katelyn and Nicholas Lange; his brother, Bob Crable and sister, Mary Crable O'Sullivan. Brother Jack predeceased him. Chief Crable, as he was known to many, was a lifelong resident of Sparkill. A member of the John Paulding Engine Co. from the age of 18, an Orangetown Police Officer for 37 years, rising through the ranks to become its visionary Chief for 14 years, an active Piermont Rotarian, Chief Crable was in and of his community. Bill graduated from Tappan Zee High School in 1950. He was in the U.S. Army's 187th Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division, stationed in Germany from 1954 to 1955. His serious pursuit of education began at Seton Hall University, receiving from there his A.A. and B.S. degrees followed by an M.A. degree in Criminal Justice from C.W. Post. In 1971 he was among the first officers in Rockland County to graduate from the FBI National Academy. To Chief Crable, the educated and thinking person was an asset to any endeavor. He organized the criminal justice program at Rockland Community College and taught there. His work included service on boards and committees effecting crime control and organized crime. Colonial Fireworks Company engrossed Bill in recent years. He was both partner and operator for great firework displays in Rockland County and beyond. A gifted thinker with good deeds to his credit - he will be missed. Friends will be welcome at the Pizzi Funeral Home, Paris Avenue, Northvale, NJ on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 am in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Tappan with burial to follow at Rockland Cemetery. ANTHONY R.
