Obituary

Nicholas J. D'Auria passed away on September 23, 2007 with courage and dignity after a brief illness while visiting his family in Rockland County. He was a resident of Sun City, AZ for 12 years and was a previous longtime Sparkill resident. Nicholas was born on March 4, 1923 to Vincent and Mary Berardi in Hawthorne, NJ. Nicholas was graduate of Tappan Zee High School in Piermont where he was an avid sportsman excelling in baseball, basketball and soccer. He proudly served in the US Army during WW II and was stationed in England, France and Germany after the invasion of Normandy. For many years, he owned and operated D'Auria and Sons Market in Sparkill. Nicholas was a former member of the John M. Perry American Legion Post No. 1044 in Sparkill, a past venerable member of the Sons of Italy of Piermont and a life member of the Sparkill Volunteer Fire Department. He was also an avid golfer and bowler who bowled a perfect '300' game. Nicholas was a passionate New York Yankee and New York Football Giants fan as well. On June 16, 1946, he married is high school sweetheart, Patricia Dizzine, to whom he was married for 61 years. Along with his wife, Patricia, he is survived by his children, Patrick D'Auria and his wife Patricia of Fall Brook, CA, Pamela Hutmacher and her husband Terry of Pomona, Nicholas D'Auria and his wife Carolyn of Washingtonville, NY and Maria Grunski and her husband Joseph of Tappan. Nicholas is also survived by ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his sister, Ann Camera of Florida; and his brothers, Dominick D'Auria of Palisades and Joseph D'Auria of Sparkill. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, 11 am, at St. John's Church in Piermont, with burial to follow at F.W. Loescher Veterans Cemetery in New Hempstead. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, 7-9 pm and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan.
