Obituary

Mr. John A. McKenna, Jr. of Hamptonburgh, NY, passed away December 25, 2004 at the Bronx VA Medical Center at the age of 85. John was born August 16, 1919 in Blauvelt, NY, the son of Judge John A. and Catherine Pendergast. He graduated from Greenbush Academy in Blauvelt and Tappan Zee High School. John graduated from St. Peters College lettering in golf in 1941. John joined the US Army in 1942 and was in Papquay, Northern New Guinea, Morotai and Mindanao in the Philippines during World War II. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star with a 'V' for valor. He was discharged in December of 1945. John was the first commander of the VFW Post 7462 in Piermont. In 1945, he graduated Albany Law School and was the Village Attorney for three years for the Village of Piermont and Police Justice for 16 years. In 1972, he moved to the Town of Hamptonburgh where he became the Town Attorney for a short time. Survivors include his loyal companion, his little dog Rusty. His sisters: Doris Elizabeth O'Neill of Tappan and Ellen Patricia Secor of Longmont, CO. His brothers: Joseph McKenna of Tappan and George McKenna of Middlefield, NY. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Ann Flounlacker and Mary C. McKenna, his brother Conrad McKenna and also his nephews Andrew, James and John McKenna. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, 10 am, at the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Tappan with burial to follow at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill.
